The Story Continues

Our first messages on Facebook: We reference “Breaking Bad,” “Better Call Saul,” and “The X-Files.” There was little hope.

THE NEW FRIENDS

Sounds innocent, doesn’t it? It totally was. Two people, with mutual friends, chatting here and there about random geek things. We spend a month giggling at each others posts and references.  He put up something about a new word called “swearenting” which is a combination of “parenting” and “swearing.” To be used as such: How many *&(*)#)(@ times do I need to tell you to brush your teeth?”

Yep, we were on the same wavelength.

So we chatted for a month or so, until the beginning of June 2015. I flew to LA for a work meeting, and he, at the same time, happened to be coming to the states to speak at a conference at the U of Minnesota, so we were actually flying at the same time. He posted something about how Lovecraft would be appalled at how dumbed down Cthulhu has become in popular culture and I replied “I bet he’d hate my Hello Kitty Cthulhu tattoo and my childrens’ bedding set.” And he messaged and said he’d almost died laughing. And we were chatting about airports and sending pics of what we were seeing, and he was asking questions about America (“these drinks! Why do you need these huge drinks?”) it was becoming really, more interesting and very easy. We were also, then, roughly, in the same time zone (at least better than 5 hours difference) and so we finally FaceTimed (no we hadn’t until that point. Just FB chatting for over a month).

And it went on for almost two hours. TWO HOURS WITH A SCOTTISH STRANGER.

It was amazing. He was worried about me understanding his accent, ha (which, yes, is dreamy so very dreamy but he actually just has a great voice too) and we laughed and had really the best “date” possible, over FaceTime.

The next day was actually his birthday. He’s six months younger than me, but now, hey, we’re both 43! And we were both flying home, back through airports and FaceTiming a few times as we were traveling, and I was sending him weird birthday memes and GIFs. I was flying from LAX to Philly, and about the same time, he was on a flight from Minneapolis to Halifax, NS.

It’s like a MOVIE.  But then, it kept being more like a movie.
