I’m writing this on August 22nd, and so I know we’re still dragging along in summer, BUT the kids are back to school, the weather is ALMOST cooling down here in Virginia, and all of the travel (for the foreseeable future) is done. With the Mitchell invasion of the U.S. (20 days) and the James-and-me trip at the beginning of this month (10 days), we were so so so lucky to have spent 30+ days together this summer (yes, I’ll recap that 30 days eventually, because there are some great stories).
Wow. 30 days together with my husband. How awesome is that. And it’s going to have to last us for a while, because, for the first time ever in our relationship, we don’t have another trip booked yet. We have an idea of when we can get together (after Christmas) but we’ve always had a policy, since that first weekend together leading into Labor Day, to always part ways knowing when the next visit is precisely.
But we don’t know now. Flights are expensive, and there’s a lot of work and kids and family and budgeting to do right now. So our five times together this year (in the first eight months) will see us through.
We’re just accepting that right now. That’s hard to accept in and of itself, but I look back on the 30 days together this summer, all together as a family for a good bit of it, and those other visits we’ve gotten this year already (more than planned, if we include the immediate turnaround trip in January after Hugh’s passing), and we’re okay. We’re still luckier than most people.
So, the tentative plan right now is for me to fly there after Christmas, on Boxing Day or the 27th, and stay through the anniversary of Hugh’s passing. So, at the minimum, at this writing, we have four months, four days, and 4 hours (approximately) until I fly.

I should buy a lottery ticket.
Autumn in Virginia, though, will carry me through it. It’s my favorite season. Football, and mums, and pumpkin spice lattes ok sure I’m basic, and Hallowe’en and my birthday, and Thanksgiving… and then Christmas. The 4-4-4 will be colorful and beautiful and chilly and here. It will be here. And he will be there. We’ll rely on the texting and the FaceTime to see us through, together.
